CES 2022: Joint presentation of the optical network for autonomous vehicles

(PresseBox) (Madrid, Spain ,
KDPOF, a leading provider of gigabit connectivity over fiber optics, proudly states that Funzin, a software development and edge AI solutions company, is adding the KD1053 IC and the integrated KD9351 FOT (Fiber Optic Transceiver) to the new Funzin AIoT platform " FAIP 3.0 ”and the Edge AI device“ Photon ”for the automotive sector. “The networks in autonomous vehicles must be able to control and process a large amount of sensor data,” explains Deuk Hwa Kim, CEO / President of Funzin. "Our automotive network solution offers an Ethernet backbone environment based on optical polymer fibers (POF) in order to avoid interference from electronic waves." The new system solution provides the infrastructure for gigabit communication that is required for sending and receiving High capacity data is required. “We are excited to support FAIP 3.0 and Photon with our new KD9351 FOT, which, when combined with the existing KD1053 IC, reduces 1 Gb / s costs by 30 percent compared to shielded twisted pair (STP) copper cables “, Adds Carlos Pardo, CEO and co-founder of KDPOF. "By designing the transimpedance amplifier, the photodiode, the LED driver and the LED in a single component, the integrated KD9351 offers efficient optical connectivity for secure Ethernet backbones and sensor connections for driver assistance systems (ADAS) in vehicles." STP) by 30 percent, ”adds Carlos Pardo, CEO and co-founder of KDPOF. "By designing the transimpedance amplifier, the photodiode, the LED driver and the LED in a single component, the integrated KD9351 offers efficient optical connectivity for secure Ethernet backbones and sensor connections for driver assistance systems (ADAS) in vehicles."

Future-proof with an optical network in vehicles

The main advantages of the optical solution are the superior electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) thanks to the inherent galvanic isolation, the low weight and the low costs. The optical cables are absolutely reliable and in the bandwidth range at least as flexible as copper cables. They allow fast, dynamic and tight bending as well as immersion in dark liquids. In addition, the connectivity via fiber optics guarantees simple engineering for seamless implementation.

System solution: cost-efficient, flexible, reliable

The new Funzin AIoT platform “FAIP 3.0” and the Edge AI device “Photon” contain a controller board, a POF-QHD camera and a POF cable. The carrier board supports the connection to a large number of POF legacy devices. It offers eight optical interfaces with the KD1053 and KD9351 from KDPOF, each delivering bandwidths of 1 gigabit per second. The integrated KD9351 FOT is not only inexpensive, it also shortens the supply chain and eliminates the need for duplicate tests, as the final test takes place at Tier1. In addition, assembly is simplified and the connector offers a "snap-in" connection without soldering.

The KD9351 uses inexpensive MEMs encapsulation and enables SMD reflow assembly with 8 x 7 mm LGA components. It is completely shielded from electromagnetic radiation. The fiber connection is made via a very simple, attached plastic plug. The temperature range from -40 ° C to +105 ° C corresponds to the harsh environmental requirements in the automotive sector. The FOT withstands the conditions in the engine compartment with a vibration class of V2. In addition, the module can withstand water without a seal. The EMC performance is excellent even with the control unit housing removed, as the shielding is integrated into the PCB component. The optics implement Tx and Rx lenses.

KDPOF and Funzin will present their optical network solution for autonomous vehicles at the international trade fair CES from January 5th to 8th, 2022 at booth 6870 in the Tech West Hall in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, and online.
